Sibiu and Around: What to See, Where to Go, and What Will Inspire You
Sibiu has personality. Its old tiled roofs seem to “peek” at passersby with their little “eyes,” and its narrow streets fill with live music and coffee aromas every evening. The center is small, cozy, and full of surprises: an old pharmacy museum, a “liar’s bridge,” vibrant murals, and quirky cafés.
Be sure to stroll through the Big and Small Squares — the heart of the old town. Check out the Brukenthal Museum, relax in the shaded arcade on Small Square with a cup of coffee and a fresh kürtőskalács — a sugar-coated dough roll. For something truly unique, visit the Pharmacy Museum — they’ve got real alchemist jars and 500-year-old recipes.
If you’re in the mood for nature and a rural vibe — head to the ASTRA Ethnographic Park. It’s an open-air world of old farmhouses, mills, boats, taverns, and the smell of fresh bread. You can get there in just 10 minutes from the city center. On the way back, keep an eye out for street art — Sibiu has dozens of colorful murals, and more pop up every year.
In the summer, the city turns into a stage: in May and June, Sibiu hosts the largest international theater festival in Eastern Europe. And in December, it becomes a fairytale — the Christmas market lights up the main square with garlands and the smell of mulled wine.
There are also foodie delights: sheep cheese from nearby villages, dry-aged sausage, linden honey, and Transylvanian wines. At the Central Market, you’ll find hidden gems of farm-to-table cuisine.
Beyond the City: Carpathians, Castles, and Wine Routes
Plan at least a day or two to explore outside the city. In just an hour, you can be in the mountains, a shepherd village, or walking along the walls of a medieval fortress. One of the most impressive trips is to Bâlea Lake in the Făgăraș Mountains. The road there — the Transfăgărășan — is an epic ride with twists and movie-worthy views. In winter, you take the cable car; in summer, you can drive right up. The lake sits among cliffs, and there are trails around it that lead into the mountains — no need to be a pro hiker, just wear solid shoes.
For peace and greenery, head to the Cindrel Mountains. It’s quieter, more forested, and in the village of Păltiniș, you can enjoy hiking trails or skiing in winter.
Closest castle? The Făgăraș Fortress — massive, with a moat, towers, and a museum inside. It was never taken by force — you’ll feel that walking along its thick stone walls. A couple of hours from Sibiu is Corvin Castle — a real gothic beast with towers, a drawbridge, and Dracula legends. Along the way, stop by fortified churches — especially in Biertan, where they used to “reconcile” couples seeking divorce by locking them in a room together overnight.
Looking for something more magical? Head to the Clay Castle in the Valley of Fairies. Built from wood and straw like something out of a fairytale. It’s a modern build, but super photogenic and atmospheric — especially in spring.
For foodies — wine and cheese trails are a must. In the villages west of Sibiu, you can try aromatic white wines straight from the vineyards. They also serve fresh sheep cheese, jams, liqueurs, and host tastings and vineyard tours. Fall is the perfect season: grape harvests, wine festivals, markets full of fruit and rich autumn smells.
Pro tip: Go for a car with high ground clearance — it’ll make mountain driving way more comfortable.
