Why Panek Pulled the Plug on Carsharing in Poland

It’s the end of the road for one of Poland’s biggest names in carsharing. In March 2025, Panek CarSharing shut down for good. The company had been around since 2017, offering short-term, minute-based rentals in more than 250 cities across Poland. But after nearly eight years in the game, Panek decided to park the service permanently.

So, what went wrong?
According to CEO Maciej Panek, the idea of carsharing sounded great in theory — and even gained solid traction in the early years — but just didn’t make sense long term. “We developed carsharing with great enthusiasm,” he said, “but unfortunately, this model didn’t take root in Poland’s realities. We have to admit it simply didn’t work out from a business standpoint.”

Behind the scenes, a number of issues piled up. Cars were frequently damaged or vandalized. Some users treated the fleet more like bumper cars than borrowed vehicles. On top of that, Panek and other carsharing operators got no help from local governments — no discounted parking, no incentives, no real support. Throw in rising costs for fuel, insurance, and interest rates, and you’ve got a business model that just couldn’t hold up.

Even with thousands of vehicles on the road and a million-plus registered users, the math just didn’t work anymore. So Panek made the call to step away from carsharing entirely.

But that doesn’t mean the company’s going away. Far from it. Panek is going back to what it’s been doing for over 25 years: traditional car rentals. Now operating under the Panek Rent a Car brand, the company offers daily and long-term rentals not only across Poland, but also in Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, and Slovakia.

Panek has shifted focus to serving travelers, hotels, car dealerships, and corporate clients. The carsharing dream may be over — at least for this company — but the road ahead still looks busy.
